WHAT'S IN A NAME (click on)

Our grandfather, Charles Avery Jarvis was born on a farm near Jamesburg, Illinois on June 28, 1865. He died at the family farm near Collison, Illinois on February 2, 1941 after a year-long illness. His funeral and burial was held at the Newtown, Illinois Church with the Johnson Funeral Home in charge.

Our grandmother, Ethel May Byerly Jarvis was born February 17, 1880 near Catlin, Illinois. She died at the family farm on October 3, 1946. She was waked at home and the Johnson Funeral Home in Oakwood, Illinois was in charge. Burial was in the Newtown Church Cemetery.

They were married April 30, 1899 at Catlin, Illinois and raised nine children on the family farm near Collison.

Grandpa's brother, John Jarvis, was aboard the Titanic when it sank in the Atlantic Ocean and was listed on the manifest as lost.

Grandpa operated a sorgham mill on the family farm by growing sugar cane to make the molasses

Most of the children had a hand in working on the farm to help provide for the family.

A small creek ran through the front part of the farm and drinking water was carried to the house from a spring which came out of the side of a steep hill near the house. Those of us fortunate enough to have drank water from this spring  knew the taste of spring-fed water.
